How to Dress Elegantly in Summer

Summer elegance is not about wearing as little as possible. It is about the right materials, cut, colours and the ability to look refined even when the temperature rises.

Summer elegance is mainly a matter of lightness, proportion and materials that can breathe.

Start with the material, not the formality

The most common mistake in summer dressing is trying to preserve winter formality in a lighter version. A dark suit, a heavy shirt and a closed jacket construction will feel unnatural in the heat, even if the pieces themselves are of good quality. Elegant summer dressing requires a different logic: airier fabrics, a softer silhouette and less harsh contrast between individual garments.

Linen is a natural choice for warm weather. It is valued for its thermoregulating properties and its ability to wick moisture away. With linen, one thing is worth accepting: creasing is not a flaw, but part of its character. If the result is to look elegant, the rest of the outfit needs to remain clean, restrained and well fitted.

Alongside linen, wool also has a strong place in summer. Not heavy flannel or winter wool, but open-weave summer wool. Wool can work even in warm weather because it helps keep the body dry and comfortable. A special category is Fresco, or high-twist wool in general. The advantage of Fresco fabrics lies in their suitability for travel, lightness and resistance to creasing. That is precisely why Fresco trousers or a summer wool jacket are often more elegant than a purely linen alternative.

Shirt, trousers and jacket: the summer foundation

The foundation is a good shirt. In summer, it does not always have to be formal. A linen shirt, a cotton-linen blend or a lightweight oxford can look elegant if it has the right collar, quality buttons and is not too tight. Shirts from brands such as Cordone 1956 or Scarano make sense in a summer wardrobe precisely because they combine a more artisanal character with ease. A white, light blue, cream, striped or softly olive shirt creates a base that can be easily combined with both trousers and a jacket.

Trousers determine whether an outfit looks merely comfortable or genuinely elegant. Gurkha trousers are a particularly strong summer piece in this respect. They have a higher rise, a clean line and a more distinctive fastening, which makes them look considered even without a belt. In linen, they feel more relaxed; in Fresco wool, more cultivated and versatile. The combination of a linen shirt and Gurkha trousers in a quality summer fabric is therefore a good way to look refined without a tie or a formal suit.

Five combinations that work in summer

Elegant summer dressing does not need to be complicated. A few combinations are enough, and they can be adapted to a working day, dinner, holiday or summer event.

• Linen shirt + Gurkha trousers + loafers: the strongest foundation for smart casual summer dressing. It works in beige, white, olive, light blue and tobacco tones.
• Summer jacket + open-collar shirt + light trousers: suitable for dinner, a garden event or an informal meeting. The jacket should be lightweight, ideally without heavy construction.
• Fresco wool trousers + cotton-linen shirt: an excellent option for the city and travel, as Fresco holds its shape better than pure linen.
• Linen jacket + white or cream T-shirt + elegant trousers: a more relaxed option that still looks cultivated, provided the T-shirt fits well and is not see-through.
• Shirt with rolled-up sleeves + higher-rise trousers: a simple combination for a hot day. The key lies in proportion, clean shoes and a well-kept collar.

Avoid overly tight cuts, heavy dark fabrics and too much contrast. Summer elegance should feel light. If the outfit looks as though it requires too much effort, it is probably too complicated.

Colours and details: less contrast, more calm

A summer wardrobe usually works better in lighter and more muted tones. Cream, beige, stone, sand, light grey, light blue, olive and tobacco feel more natural than hard black and sharp contrast. Navy blue still has its place, but in summer it often benefits from a lighter texture: hopsack, linen, a wool-silk blend or wool with linen.

For footwear, loafers, suede loafers, lightweight derby shoes or clean leather sandals in a truly informal setting all work well. Trainers can work too, but in an elegant summer outfit they should be simple, clean and free from an overtly sporty character. Keep accessories restrained: a leather belt only where needed, a pocket square preferably in a muted tone, and a watch with a leather, textile or metal strap according to the overall level of formality.

The first layer also matters. With light-coloured shirts, a skin-tone invisible undershirt is usually better than a white one, as it shows through less and does not disturb the cleanliness of the outfit. Summer elegance often rests precisely on such details: not on conspicuousness, but on the fact that the whole looks calm and refined.

Nonchalant approaches the summer wardrobe in the same way it approaches menswear as a whole: fewer pieces, but better chosen. A good linen shirt, quality summer trousers and a lightweight jacket can handle far more situations than it may seem. They are not a seasonal whim, but the foundation of a wardrobe that makes sense year after year.
