Sunglasses differ in more than just frame shape and lens colour. The material of the lenses also plays an important role. Mineral glass offers different characteristics from modern plastic, also known as organic, lenses—from weight and durability to everyday care. We explain the differences and how to choose the right option.

Mineral glass generally offers a highly scratch-resistant surface and excellent optical quality, although it tends to be heavier and may break under a strong impact. Plastic, or organic, lenses are usually lighter and less brittle, but their surface durability depends more heavily on hard coatings and other protective treatments. Neither material is therefore automatically better for everyone.
The best lens is not the one whose material sounds the most luxurious. It is the lens that suits the way you will actually use your sunglasses.
Material is only one part of a quality lens
Sunglasses are both a fashion accessory and an optical product. Their overall quality is therefore determined by more than the brand or the lens material. The precision of the lens curvature, the uniformity of its surface, the sun filter, protective coatings, frame construction and the position of the lenses in front of the eyes all play an important role.
The fundamental requirement is protection from ultraviolet radiation. According to guidance from the World Health Organization, quality sunglasses should absorb UVA and UVB radiation up to a wavelength of 400 nanometres, commonly described as UV400 protection. This cannot be assessed reliably from the colour, price or darkness of the lens.
Polarisation is a separate characteristic. A polarising filter reduces intense glare reflected from roads, water and wet surfaces, making driving and outdoor activities more comfortable. As the American Academy of Ophthalmology points out, polarisation does not replace UV protection. Sunglasses may offer effective UV protection without being polarised, while a polarised label alone does not confirm the level of UV protection.
Mineral glass and plastic lenses: what is the difference?
The term mineral lens refers to a lens manufactured from genuine optical glass. Plastic lenses are also commonly called organic lenses in the optical industry, although this does not mean that the material is necessarily natural in origin. The category includes several different polymers, each of which may offer different weight, optical and durability characteristics.
Mineral glass has a naturally hard and exceptionally smooth surface. It therefore generally offers better resistance to fine scratches caused by everyday use. Its disadvantages are higher weight and greater brittleness under strong impact. Plastic lenses are usually lighter and less likely to shatter, although their surfaces are softer without a quality hard coating. When driving or spending extended periods outdoors, polarisation, lens colour and the ability to respond to changing light conditions matter alongside the lens material.
A simple rule: Choose mineral glass for its optical performance and naturally hard surface. Choose plastic lenses when low weight, a lighter frame and practical everyday comfort are the priorities.
Five key differences
When comparing individual models, it is useful to consider the following characteristics:
- Weight: plastic lenses are generally lighter, which is particularly noticeable in larger frames and during all-day wear.
- Scratch resistance: mineral glass has a naturally harder surface. With plastic lenses, scratch resistance depends heavily on the quality of the hard coating and other protective layers.
- Impact resistance: plastic lenses are usually less brittle, although their exact resistance depends on the particular polymer and construction. Standard sunglasses should not be treated as occupational or sports safety eyewear.
- Optical performance: quality mineral glass is valued for its clear and stable visual performance. Well-manufactured organic lenses can nevertheless also provide very good optics.
- Care: both materials require appropriate cleaning and storage in a protective case. Scratches on either mineral glass or plastic lenses cannot normally be removed safely by polishing.

The table describes general differences between the two materials. The actual result may also be influenced by lens thickness, curvature, the type of plastic used, surface hardening, anti-reflective treatments and the overall construction of the sunglasses. Lens material should therefore never be assessed separately from the quality of the individual model.
How to choose between Serengeti, Hackett London and WEB Eyewear

Mineral lenses are well suited to those who value a durable surface, refined optical performance and advanced light management. UV protection, polarisation and the quality of protective coatings must be assessed separately, as they are not automatically determined by the lens material.
All sunglasses should be cared for with the same level of attention. First remove loose dust from the lenses, then rinse them with lukewarm water and, if necessary, use a small amount of mild, non-abrasive soap. Do not clean the lenses when dry using a T-shirt, paper tissue or another coarse fabric. Small particles caught on the surface can create fine scratches when rubbed across the lens. Keep the sunglasses in their case, avoid placing them lens-side down and do not leave them for extended periods on a hot car dashboard. Proper care will extend the lifespan of both mineral and plastic lenses, regardless of their price category.
